A Classic Returns: Callahan’s Hot Dogs Reopens In Fort Lee

The 100-seat restaurant brings back its deep-fried hot dogs with that classic crunch.

FORT LEE, N.J. — A classic has returned to where it all started.

Callahan’s Hot Dog Emporium re-opened recently in the borough, the place where customers first lined up for a taste of what became a classic New Jersey deep-fried hot dog.

The longtime restaurant closed in 2006, but the founder’s nephew brought the restaurant back with a restaurant in Norwood and some food trucks.

Now, Lenny Castrianni, son of founders Artie and Ida, has brought the restaurant back to its roots. The two restaurants are not affiliated with one another.

The menu includes the same as the first Callahan’s — hot dogs, hamburgers, and fries — along with some new items like hot dog-filled sushi.

“People are telling us that our food has the same great taste that they had always remembered,” Castrianni said. “They’re telling us, ‘Thank you for bringing back the memories that we’ve always cherished.”

Callahan's is at 1400 Anderson Ave. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
