FORT LEE HISTORICAL SOCIETY GUEST SPEAKER – AL PALZER ON FORT LEE’S CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS

Fort Lee Historical Society member and local historian Al Palzer will speak on the 150th Anniversary of a group of young men who on May 4th, 1861, answered the call from a desperate United States President Abraham Lincoln for volunteer soldiers during the American Civil War.  Two of these men, James Conway and Jacob Hopper were killed at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1861.  In their eagerness to serve the Country, this group of over 25 men enlisted in New York City as all the New Jersey militias were filled.  Because they enlisted in New York rather than New Jersey, their sacrifices were not recognized by the people of Bergen County and are now forgotten.  This exciting lecture will bring the exploits of these men back to life.
