WATCH: State-Of-Emergency As Five-Alarm Blaze Still Rages At Edgewater Apartment Complex

Hundreds of residents evacuated as firefighters battled to save Avalon at Edgewater. Smoke still billowing on Thursday morning.

A five-alarm blaze engulfed the luxury Avalon at Edgewater apartment complex in Edgewater on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of more than 400 residents and leaving the property on the brink of collapse, according to media reports.

Roads in the area, such as River Road, were closed and schools were dismissed as smoke from the fire continued to billow on Thursday morning. Hundreds of firefighters from throughout the state remained on the scene Thursday morning, working to snuff out the blaze.

The blaze, which broke out at about 4:20 p.m., quickly engulfed the luxury complex, leading firefighters from 11 local municipalities, including Fort Lee, Teaneck and Englewood and others, to assist a small volunteer force, according a report in NorthJersey.com.

A local state of emergency was declared, and Mayor Michael McPartland told reporters that local schools would be closed on Thursday and access to roads will be restricted. Residents were able to get out safely, and no injuries were reported, according to News12.

Authorities cordoned off some streets around the burning building, where the cause of the fire was not determined. Some 150 residents were relocated to a local community center, according to News12.

The Daily News reported that the complex is the home of Yankees radio announcer John Sterling, who feared that he may have lost all of his possessions in the blaze.

The New York Fire Department reportedly sent five boats to battle the inferno from the Hudson River, while emergency management officials from Bergen County and ambulances from Fort Lee were on the scene.
