Fort Lee Horizon House Workers Go On Strike

The strike comes after months of trying to negotiate a new contract under good faith, the local union said.

FORT LEE, NJ — Workers at the Horizon House building went on strike Monday after they claim they are being subjected to illegal and unfair labor practices.

Workers at the six-building residential complex claim they found out last year that Horizon's Board of Directors was planning to fire them and bring in a non-union contract who would, "pay less and provide fewer benefits," the workers' union, 32BJ SEIU said in a press release Monday.

Negotiations went on for four months without any proposals from the Board, who said it was "simply looking to lower shareholder costs," according to the union.

The union's local bargaining committee offered proposals that would save the Board reportedly more money than they were asking for, but it rejected the deal, according to the union.

The Board demanded greater concessions, including reducing the pension, which officials wanted to cut entirely.
