Lead Levels In Fort Lee Schools' Water Were Too High: State

FORT LEE, NJ — The Fort Lee Public School District is one of 61 New Jersey districts that had too much lead in their water recently, a new state database shows.

Gov. Phil Murphy announced Thursday that the New Jersey Department of Education has created the centralized database with lead-testing information from school districts.

High lead levels were found in water at Elementary School Nos. 1, 3, and 4, Lewis F. Cole Middle School, and Fort Lee High School. (Click here for testing results and the district's lead testing program statement of assurance.)

Rep. Josh Gotteimer, D-Bergen and Murphy announced a three-pronged approach to strengthening the state's response to lead testing and remediating elevated lead levels in New Jersey schools' drinking water.

The centralized, state-managed database provides water quality information reported by school entities, including whether any samples exceeded the permissible lead action level, the date of the most recent sampling, a link to the full sampling results, and contact information for the school district or other school entity.
