Man Stole Beer, Fought With ShopRite Manager, Cops Say

Hackettstown man allegedly took off with six-pack and was later found by railroad tracks.

A Hackettstown man was charged with shoplifting and harassment Wednesday after police said he stole a six-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer from ShopRite Wine & Liquors and fought with the store manager.

Daniel Steffener, 26, had gone into the Main Street store just after 3 p.m. attempting to buy the beer, valued at $4.55, according to Sgt. Darren Tynan. Steffener did not have enough money to purchase the beer and got into an argument with the store manager, Tynan said.

Steffener left the store, but came back, this time taking the beer with him without paying the full value, Tynan said.

Steffener was found by police officers on Route 46 near the railroad tracks. He had the beer in his possession, Tynan said. He was arrested and transported to the Hackettstown police station and later released with a date to appear in court.
