For the sixth year, Centenary College will offer a summer enrichment program for rising 8th through 12th graders starting at the end of this month.

Middle and high school students interested in getting a taste of the college experience can participate in the Centenary Summer Scholars Program from June 30 through July 27, 2013. Students who enroll have the opportunity to attend classes and live on campus or participate as a day student.

The co-ed academic program is designed to broaden the minds of young students by introducing subjects their schools might not offer to them, which also gives them the opportunity to experiment with classes to see if they would like to pursue the subject matter as a career. Centenary caters to a diverse group of students from all over the country and the world.

The 2013 season will offer four one-week sessions running from Sunday to Saturday. Students can choose from a number of one-week courses: Sustainability, Forensic Science, Veterinary Science, Creative Writing, Fashion Design, Television Production, and Computer Programming and Game Design. Sustainability is a new addition this summer, and will only be offered during week four. Also new this year are three classes offering two sections of their subject, including Veterinary Science 101 and 102; Creative Writing 101: Fiction and Poetry, and Creative Writing 102: Journalism and College Prep; Fashion Design 101: Sketching and Sewing and Fashion Design 102: Project Centenary. These new courses allow students staying for multiple sessions to enhance their learning experience even further. Students attending multiple sessions may stay in the same course without repeating the curriculum, or may choose a new academic track. All sessions accept students at all levels. Courses are taught by college professors and knowledgeable instructors.

Summer Scholars will offer multi-week discounts for both day and residential students.  A discount is given for each week of the program a student attends. A student staying two weeks, for example, could save $100 to $300, depending on their enrollment.

“I have taught the Television Production classes for the past six years through this program and the students are enthusiastic and ready to learn, which makes my job a real pleasure,” said Matt Mendres, assistant professor of communication at Centenary College. “The students bring a lot of energy and it is clear that they are learning and having a great time.  I look forward to meeting this summer’s new scholars.”
