Tractor-Trailer Driver Hit By Car After Getting Out of Truck, Police Say

Florida man suffered injuries throughout his body after walking into traffic Saturday morning on Route 517, police said.

A Florida man sustained multiple injuries after being struck by a car in a Saturday morning accident that shut down Route 517 in both directions near Oak Street for about an hour, Hackettstown Police said.

According to Sgt. Darren Tynan, police officers and the Hackettstown Rescue Squad arrived at Route 517 and Oak Street at about 7 a.m. Saturday. Assisting at the scene were the St Clare’s Medic Unit and Independence Township Police.

Police determined that Aleksandr Vasilievich, 57, of Palm Coast, Fla., was traveling south on Route 517 in a tractor trailer. He stopped in the southbound lane, exited his vehicle and walked into the northbound lane, where he was then struck by a 2006 Ford driven by 74-year-old Robert Schaake, of Allamuchy Township, Tynan said.

Vasilievich suffered injuries throughout his body, Tynan said, adding that he was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment. His current condition was not known. The sergeant said police are still investigating why Vasilievich got out of his vehicle and walked into the northbound lane.

No summonses have been issued in the crash, Tynan said.
