Do You Know What to Do if Someone Overdoses?

LAUREL SPRINGS, N.J. – International Opioid Overdose Awareness Day is Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, and it’s not a day too soon for the concerned staff at Victory Bay Recovery Center.

With the opioid crisis showing no signs of easing up in New Jersey, surrounding states and across the nation, Victory Bay co-founder A.J. Solomon wants those suffering from addiction and their family members to know what to do in the event of an overdose.

“It cannot be said enough: If we can save just one life, then our efforts are worth it,” says Solomon, who is a Garden State native and a recovering addict.

In the event of an overdose:
• If the person is not conscious, or semiconscious, try to wake them up.
• If that doesn’t work, rub the sternum (the flat plate that forms the center of the chest front), or, rub the person’s upper lip.
• If the overdose victim awakens, see if they can speak and check their breathing. If the person has shortness of breath or chest tightness, immediately call 911.

“We hope that no one ever has to deal with an overdose, but the fact is they occur every day,” says Solomon. “Once the person is stable and the crisis over, it is important to get the addicted loved one to a facility so that he or she can begin a comprehensive and holistic treatment program.”
