Evelyn Gottlieb Hayes, 88, formerly of Hasbrouck Heights and West Palm Beach, Fla., died Sunday in Whippany, after a long illness.

Gottlieb was the daughter of Katherine Kennedy Luther and Philip Gottlieb, and was born Sept. 7, 1926 in Passaic. She graduated from Pope Pius XII High School in Passaic and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City. Evelyn married Samuel C. Hayes on Feb. 18, 1950. Her beloved spouse predeceased her in December 2000.

Gottlieb was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and knitting. She was an accomplished golfer and had the distinction of scoring a hole-in-one on three occasions.

Gottlieb is survived by her daughters Suzanne Hayes Charuk, Joyce Hayes Brannen, and Maryann Hayes Labella; four grandchildren, Caroline, Jonathan, Sara, Evan and her sister, Anne Durborow.

Funeral services are private. Donations may be made to the Primary Progressive Aphasia Association. Arrangements are by the Alesso Funeral Home 91 Union St., Lodi.
