Route 15 Poses Several Dangerous Intersections, Data Shows

Many of Jefferson's accidents so far this year have occurred at highway's crossings of Bowling Green Parkway, Edison Road and Berkshire Valley Road.

What does it take to make a dangerous intersection? In Jefferson Township, it appears that it takes a state highway and a traffic light.

Data provided from the Jefferson Township Police Department shows that there have been 447 traffic accidents in the township from the beginning of 2012 to Aug. 14. Of those, 31 have been at Route 15 and Bowling Green Parkway, 28 have been at Route 15 and Berkshire Valley Road and 18 have been at Route 15 and Edison Road. All of those intersections have traffic lights, and all intersect Route 15.

According to several official sources, there is nothing that the township can do to make any changes to Route 15, as it is controlled by the state. , despite years of urging from the township that something needed to be done as there were far too many accidents at that intersection.

, Jefferson Police Capt. Eric Wilsusen said the request for a light goes to the state from the mayor and council, who made the request through State Sen. Anthony Bucco (R-NJ) almost a decade ago.

"After that request, the schedule becomes completely the state's responsibility," Wilsusen said. "The state has to figure out where it stands on the priority list."
