The Alzheimer's Association Greater New Jersey Chapter (AAGNJ), the leading volunteer-driven voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support, advocacy and research is spotlighting people who are making a difference in the fight to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia. With more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia, and more than 11 million family and friends providing care and support for them, individuals across the country are seeking ways to assist those afflicted with the disease. In New Jersey alone, there are more than 190,000 people living with the disease and 347,000 caregivers. On June 20 and continuing through August 31, many of them will be participating in The Longest Day (TLD). Many events are held annually on the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, and is a day to raise awareness and funds to help end the disease.

Today we say thank you to the Butler Youth Cross Country Running Club and their coach, Carlos Gonzalez, who annually host a 5K event in support of various causes. This year they have chosen The Longest Day as their charity partner because Coach Gonzalez has a loved one living with dementia. In order to maximize their fundraising effort, they have decided to turn the 3.1 mile run into a walk-a-thon so more people can participate. They are offering a number of prizes including one for the most donations raised. All donations will be split between the running club and the Alzheimer's Association.

"It is so inspiring to see Coach Gonzalez, and his student runners from the Butler Youth Cross Country Running Club, rallying behind a cause using their passion for running, and walking, to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's disease and all other dementia.” said Danielle Buckler, Special Events Coordinator, AAGNJ. “Join the fun – rain or shine - on June 27 from 12 - 2 p.m. at Memorial Field, 1 Pearl Place, in Butler NJ. It is a perfect way to celebrate the summer solstice, and join the fight to end Alzheimer’s.”
