Micro Apartments Open In Jersey City's Journal Square

The 122-unit building is located in Journal Square and offers "micro unit rentals."

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Less is more is the new motto for some renters in Jersey City as a building with 220 square-foot micro apartments was unveiled in Journal Square over the weekend.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop cut the ribbon for the opening of Nest Micro Apartments in Journal Square. Located at 190 Academy Street, the building has 122 units, all of which are micro apartment studios and pre-furnished.

"For the millions of young and middle-earners who contribute to their city in so many ways but can’t afford their own place," the website reads.

The development is from KSNY and Strategic Properties and designed by GRO Architects. During the ribbon cutting ceremony KSNY owner Keith Schwebel said the units are renting for half the price of a studio in Manhattan. Studios in the new building start at $1,268 a month. Applicants who would like to be eligible for a Nest apartment will have at least 3 times rent as monthly income, and a FICO score of at least 670, according to the website.

According to Apartments.com, micro apartments are usually between 100 and 500 square feet.

The Journal Square location was chosen for its proximity to the PATH train and to bring economic stimulation to the area.

"We made a concerted effort about seven years ago to attract investment to Journal Square," Fulop said. "We've seen billions of dollars come into Journal Square over the last couple years and the great thing is that I still think we are in the very early stages of the renaissance here."
