Elsa The Deaf Dog Needs A Very Special Home

Elsa is now the "office dog" at the Popcorn Park Animal Shelter and is safe and sound.

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - Elsa already had enough to deal with after she was born deaf. Then the only family she had ever known gave her up after 5 years because they were moving and having a baby. They told Popcorn Park zoo officials the pup was "needy."

"Elsa was with her family since she was four weeks old, so adjusting to this huge change in her life did not suit her well," a post on the zoo's Facebook page states.

A woman with good intentions tried to adopt Elsa, but returned her the next day.

"Please, before anyone passes judgement on the adopter, we have found out quite a bit more about Elsa in the last couple of weeks especially since she has become our, "office dog" since the day she arrived," the Facebook page says.

Elsa has severe separation anxiety. When she's alone, she becomes very agitated, drools, and is very stressed. She is not destructive. She's very content and calm as long as she is not alone.

"She would benefit immensely from a home with another dog or cat to keep her company and will also need a home where she is not left alone much," the page states. "She is happy to go places with you as long as she is properly secured in a seat belted harness, as being loose in a car makes her anxious. She loves other pets and again, that would be a big help to her. A family that is experienced with separation anxiety is what Elsa needs."

Elsa is now the shelter's "office mascot" and is never in a cage.

"We absolutely love Elsa and if you know anything about us at AHS/Popcorn Park, you will know that we will do everything in our power to give her every possible chance to find the perfect home, the Facebook post says. "If you think that you could offer her the perfect home, please come in and meet her."

Elsa wears a Calm Me Down collar 24 hours a day. The zoo can always use more collars, so it you would like to send one to Elsa or one of the other dogs, please click here.
