Archrival Millburn Hands Newark Academy Its First Defeat

The Livingston school fought hard against a top rival.

Newark Academy's tennis matches against archrival Millburn High School are always exciting, and Wednesday's contest in Livingston was no exception. The Minutemen started the day with a 12-0 season record. They ended it with a 4-1 loss.

The first Millburn team point belonged to second singles Dean Koman, who dismantled Chris Paradis 6-3, 6-2.

Next, Miller first doubles came through with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Ben Hyatt and Jonathan Holtzman, notching a second team point for Millburn.

Tyler Schick at first singles clinched the match for Millburn with his win against Daniel Eatroff. Schick had been down 0-4 in the first set before solving the problem and taking six straight games for the set. The second set score was a more comfortable 6-2.

Newark Academy's only point was won at third singles, when Dylan Flanagan edged out Teddy Moskovitz 7-5, 6-3.

The last point was decided when Miller second doubles Josh Landau and Jon Duan battled back from a first-set loss to defeat Reid Schalet and Arjuna Siva, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. 

Millburn's next contest is against Montclair High School in the semifinal round of the Essex County Tournament, scheduled for Saturday morning at 10:30 at Branch Brook Park in Newark, with a rain date of Sunday.
