Fire Prevention Week of 2018 Starts Sunday October 7th
Open house at Livingston Fire Department kicks off Fire Prevention Week

Livingston Fire Department will be kicking off Fire Prevention week on Sunday October 7th 2018, from 1pm – 5pm during an open house at the station located at 62 S Livingston Ave.
In the United States, fire departments respond to a house fire every 86 seconds. 3 out of every 5 deaths occur in homes that do not have or fail to have working smoke alarms. 24% of the time the smoke alarm did not sound simply because the batteries were dead. The easiest way to keep your smoke alarms working is to change the batteries when you change your clocks. Early detection will give you and your family time to escape.
The National Fire Prevention Association began to sponsor National Fire Prevention Week in 1922. This was in response to the Great Chicago Fire of October 1871. The fire left over 100,000 people homeless, more than 250 dead and destroyed over 17,000 buildings. In 1925, President Coolidge declared National Fire Prevention week a national observance.

During National Fire Prevention week fire departments around the country will hold events, go to schools, and try to educate people of all ages on how to LOOK around your home to prevent fires, how to LISTEN to your alarms, and LEARN how to escape from your house. The 2018 Campaign according to the National Fire Prevention Association is “Look, Listen, and Learn.”
Fire extinguishers are common in most homes; but how many people have actually taken the time to look at the fixture hanging on the wall, learn how to use it, and know when to replace it. Watch the following 2 minute fire extinguisher tutorial to learn how to use the extinguisher on small containable fires. Remember PASS: Pull the pin. Aim, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep. PASS
