Kidney Transplant Pioneer Dies; Visitation Held In Livingston
Saint Barnabas: One of the preeminent professionals in kidney transplantation in the nation, Shamkant Mulgaonkar, has passed away.
LIVINGSTON, NJ — One of the preeminent professionals in kidney transplantation in the United States - Shamkant Mulgaonkar – passed away earlier this week, according to the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
The hospital announced Mulgaonkar’s passing on Wednesday, posting the following message of condolence:
“Dr. Mulgaonkar was one of the preeminent professionals in kidney transplantation in the United States. He was instrumental in the rapid growth of kidney transplantation and championed the development of the Living Donor Transplant Institute at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. He was a dynamic leader who has cared for thousands of kidney transplant recipients since the 1970s. He is largely responsible for the success of the RWJBarnabas Health Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division being one of the most highly regarded programs in the United States. Dr. Mulgaonkar was beloved by his patients and their families, his staff and colleagues and everyone who had the good fortune of knowing him. He will be sorely missed.”
According to a social media post from the hospital, there was a visitation at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 145 East Mount Pleasant Ave., Livingston, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 18.
