LIVINGSTON, NJ — The following news release comes courtesy of Livingston Township. Learn more about posting announcements or events to your local Patch site here.
Long “shop light” and other fluorescent bulbs will now be collected at Livingston’s household Electronics Recycling Event, Saturday, October 13 at the Senior/Community Center at 204 Hillside Avenue. There is a limit of 6 bulbs per resident. Residents can bring these, along with TVs, computers, electronics, and small appliances from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. On-site paper document shredding will also be offered, and all services are free for Livingston residents.
Senior residents with very large or heavy items they can’t bring by themselves can call Livingston’s Senior, Youth & Leisure Services office at 973-535-7925 to arrange free pickup, donated by 1-800-GOT-JUNK. Bonded crews will remove oversized items from inside seniors’ homes, by appointment.

TVs, cell phones, laptops, computers, monitors, printers, keyboards, copiers, VCRs, stereos, and electronic games are accepted, as well as small appliances and rechargeable batteries. Computers, TVs and other electronics cannot, by law, be disposed of in curbside trash, as they often contain hazardous metals that pollute groundwater.
Paper shredding will also be offered, with a secure on-site shredder that residents can watch as it destroys their documents. Residents may bring up to five boxes of papers, with metal bindings or clips removed.

“This is part of our commitment to providing useful services to the residents of Livingston,” stated Mayor Ed Meinhardt. “We want to make recycling easy for our citizens.” Council member Shawn Klein, liaison to the volunteer recycling committee, added “I want to thank the recycling volunteers, some of the many people involved in helping keep Livingston a great community.”
Residents unable to attend the event can drop off electronic items (but NO bulbs or paper) early, at the Senior/Community Center in Craft Room 1, lower level, on Thursday, October 11th, 8:30am to 10:00pm, or Friday, October 12th, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Recycling Committee Chairman Scott Goldman said, “This event is a fun way to kick off your fall cleaning, and we’re excited to keep expanding our recycling efforts by adding the new fluorescent bulb collection.” For questions about what can be accepted, visit www.LivingstonRecycles.org or call Scott Goldman at 973-992-6322.
Crews at the event will unload all items from vehicles. Volunteers from the Livingston Recycling and Reclamation Committee and from the Livingston High School Science National Honor Society will also be on site to help out.
“This is the last Township Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding event for 2018,” continued Mayor Meinhardt. “If you miss this one, you’ll have to wait until April 2019 for the next one. I encourage residents to take advantage of this free opportunity to get rid of unwanted electronics and shred their confidential papers.”
“Remember,” added Meinhardt, “If it has a plug, you can recycle it with electronics.”
