Livingston High School Student Making Waves With Orchestra

Alexander Wu, a senior at Livingston High School, won this year's Livingston Symphony Orchestra's Young Artist Concerto Competition.

LIVINGSTON, NJ — Alexander Wu, a senior at Livingston High School, recently won this year's Livingston Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Concerto Competition.

Wu performed at the orchestra's concert on June 8, and received a $1,000 scholarship for his efforts.

"Alexander Wu is a senior at Livingston High School. He grew up in a music family with two older sisters who excelled in instrumental music. Alex began piano lessons at age six and soon after discovered his passion for clarinet. Though he is primarily a clarinetist, Alex also enjoys singing and playing saxophone, guitar, piano.

"Alex is the Principal Clarinetist of the Livingston High School Wind Symphony under the direction of Mr. Michael Jedwabnik. Throughout high school, he has participated in the North Jersey Region Wind Ensemble, North Jersey Region Orchestra (Principal Clarinetist in 2018 and 2019), New Jersey All-State Wind Ensemble, and New Jersey All-State Orchestra (2nd Chair clarinet). This year, Alex has been selected into the All-Eastern Honors Band, and he will be performing with young musicians from thirteen states at the 2019 NAfME Eastern Division Conference this April.

"Alex's favorite orchestra ensemble is the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Academy Orchestra, of which he has been the Principal Clarinetist since 2016. He was the winner of the 2016 Academy Orchestra Henry Lewis Concerto Competition.

"Alex is a student of Mr. Andrew Lamy, renowned clarinetist and member of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He would like to thank Andy for always guiding him in the right direction as a musician and a growing person.

"Besides performing in various ensembles, Alex is an active member of Tri-M Honor Society. He’s volunteered at local concerts, performed live for peers and teachers, represented Livingston High School in local events, and tutored clarinet for younger students."
