Livingston Resident Earns Valor Award from the 200 Club

Essex Sheriff's Detective Fitzgerald Figliuolo will be recognized in May

Essex Sheriff’s Detective Fitzgerald Figliuolo, a Livingston resident, will be presented with a Valor Award from The 200 Club of Essex County on May 9 at a luncheon at Mayfair Farms in West Orange.

The 200 Club of Essex County was founded to assist the families of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty and is the oldest such organization of its kind. The 200 Club of Essex County has raised nearly $2 million to support the spouses of fallen officers and to fund scholarships for their children through membership dues and the annual luncheon.

Figliuolo is recognized for services rendered during Sandy.

During the weather emergency, county OEM dispatched a squad of officers and an array of emergency vehicles to the PSE&G generating station on Raymond Boulevard. 

Forgione then arrived on the scene with Marine – 1, county OEM’s rescue boat.  While assessing the best location to launch the boat, a massive explosion emanated from within the generating plant.

Officer Figliuolo, with two colleagues searched the area in hopes of locating and rescuing stranded victims of the storm. Eventually Figliuolo and his fellow officers rescued five storm victims, including a security guard who was asleep in his car and unaware of the rapidly deteriorating conditions around him.

“The job of a police officer or firefighter is tougher today than ever before,” stated Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura, a member of The 200 Club’s board of trustees. 

“Law enforcement and firefighting are extremely hazardous professions which are performed at tremendous personal risk.  The work of The 200 Club of Essex County is greatly appreciated by the entire public safety community and their families.”

For his role in the rescue of a woman from a burning building, Newark Mayor Cory Booker will be presented with Citizen Recognition Valor Award.
