Suspects in Livingston car theft held following pursuit

Two Essex County men in custody after BMW crashes in high speed pursuit

Two suspects in a car chase from Livingston involving a stolen BMW yesterday were being held at the Essex County Correction Facility after they crashed into a civilian vehicle yesterday near South Orange Avenue in Millburn.

Troy Turner, 33, of Newark, was charged with receiving stolen property and unlawful possession of a handgun, according to police. Umar Yasin, 25, of East Orange, was charged with receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of a handgun.

Police said the suspects drove a stolen BMW from Livingston on a high speed pursuit into Millburn yesterday morning, before crashing into car waiting at a stop light on South Orange Avenue, and jumping onto the curb yesterday.

Police said the BMW had been originally reported stolen in West Orange in December, but Livingston police were called out yesterday morning to a report of a vehicle break in at Ross Road near Lockhern Drive.

Livingston police broke off the pursuit and the suspects were chased by multiple Millburn police vehicles before it sideswiped a civilian vehicle that was at a traffic light near South Orange Avenue and Brookside Drive. The suspects took off on foot, but were later arrested.

Bail was set at $50,000 for each man.
