Saint Barnabas Hospital Board of Trustees Welcomes Rahul Pawar

The Board of Trustees at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) recently elected Rahul V. Pawar, MD, Neuroradiologist, as its newest member.

“I have known Dr Pawar for many years. His clinical expertise, active community involvement, passion and leadership will be an asset to our board,” stated Bruce Schonbraun, Chairman, Board of Trustees, SBMC. “His deep understanding of healthcare and long-relationship with SBMC brings an important perspective to our Board as we navigate through these unprecedented times and expand our award-winning tertiary and quaternary services throughout the region.”

Dr. Pawar has been a member of the SBMC Medical Staff since 2011 as an attending neuroradiologist, and partner within Imaging Consultants of Essex (ICE) since 2017; he was recently appointed secretary of ICE. Dr. Pawar earned dual board certification from the American Board of Radiology: Diagnostic Radiology & Neuroradiology (CAQ), and has been selected to the list of "Millburn-Short Hills Super Doctors" for four consecutive years, 2017-2020. He currently serves on SBMC’s Quality Committee and Sports Medicine Committee.

Prior to joining SBMC, he completed his fellowship in neuroradiology at New York University Medical Center (NYU) in 2011, where he conducted translational physics research. His research, which was honored by the American Society of Neuroradiology, focused on using novel MR diffusion sequences to diagnose normal pressure hydrocephalus in the elderly, was. In 2005, Dr. Pawar received his medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine, began an internship in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital in Long Island and subsequent residency at UMDNJ – New Jersey Medical School. He was appointed clinical assistant professor in the Rutgers Biomedical & Health Sciences Division in 2012. Dr. Pawar is an active member of the Amato Center for Plastic, Reconstructive and Maxillofacial Surgery.

With respect to research, Dr. Pawar was awarded the Barnabas Health Harvey Nussbaum Research Grant (2013). He published and presented a substantial amount of research in both peer-reviewed literature and at national/international conferences. Dr. Pawar served as a contributing author for the textbook, The Teaching Files: Brain & Spine Imaging (Elsevier: Fatterpekar, Naidich & Som) published in 2011. Presently, he is a member of the editorial board for Radiology Today magazine.

Dr. Pawar places an emphasis on teaching and medical education earning the Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching Award for two consecutive years (2012, 2013). From 2012-2017, Dr. Pawar was a Keynote Speaker for Philips Healthcare, highlighting MRI technology and educating industry specialists across the nation. From 2015 to 2018, Dr. Pawar served as Director of the medical student elective in Diagnostic Radiology at SBMC.

Dr. Pawar is firmly rooted in the local sports community. An avid tennis player, he is a former high school All-Area, All-Conference champ and USTA-ranked player. He is one of the only practicing physicians nationwide to have earned coaching certification through the Professional Tennis Registry. The core values he has developed from years on the court will benefit him as a member of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Pawar resides in Essex Fells, NJ, with his wife and son.
