39 NJ School Districts Make AP National Honor Roll: Here's Where
You may be surprised to see what districts got just about the highest honor anybody can get.
Here's a best-schools list that could be the most surprising of them all.
Thirty-nine school districts were among 373 in the United States and Canada just honored by the College Board with placement on the 9th Annual AP District Honor Roll.
And the list includes districts that regularly do not appear on any best-of lists, such as Toms River and Irvington.

To be included on the 9th Annual Honor Roll, school districts had to increase the number of students participating in advanced placement since 2016, while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher, according to school officials.
Montville school officials said reaching these goals shows "that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP."

"I congratulate the district's faculty and administrators in all seven Montville Township Public Schools," said Superintendent René Rovtar. "I am proud to work with a team of educators who embody and implement our district motto: 'Educate. Inspire. Empower.' on a daily basis."
The superindendent said the district has worked to make sure courses must be made available to all students. Montville Township Public Schools is committed to expanding the availability of AP courses among prepared and motivated students of all backgrounds, the superintendent said.
"Success in Advanced Placement is a combination of students' own motivation and the opportunities educators provide for them," said Trevor Packer, senior vice president of AP and Instruction at the College Board. "I'm inspired by the teachers and administrators in this district who have worked to clear a path for more students of all backgrounds to earn college credit during high school."
Inclusion in the 9th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on a review of three years of AP data and at least 38 AP Exams, including world language and culture. The following criteria were used, according to Montville school officials:
- Increase participation/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts, and at least 11 percent in small districts;
- Increased or maintained the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students taking exams and increased or maintained the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students scoring 3 or higher on at least one AP Exam; and
