LONG BRANCH, NJ — This December, Monmouth Medical Center was awarded an “A” Hospital Safety Score ratings by the Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

Leapfrog released the grades December 14. Monmouth Medical Center is the only hospital in Central New Jersey and along the Jersey Shore to receive an “A” Hospital Safety Score by the Leapfrog Group for 12 consecutive rating periods.

The A, B, C, D or F letter grades given out by Leapfrog are an easy way for consumers to choose the safest hospital to seek care and have quickly become the gold standard measure of patient safety. Developed under the guidance of a Blue-Ribbon National Expert Panel, the Safety Grade assigns letter grades based on a hospital’s performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms.

In July, Monmouth Medical Center was designated as one of Newsweek’s Best Maternity Care Hospitals 2020. The maternity care program is ranked among the best in the country, as verified by the 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. The Leapfrog Group is an independent, national non-profit group run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

Monmouth Medical Center, one of 49 birthing hospitals in New Jersey, was previously recognized by the Leapfrog Group for fully meeting their quality and safety standards on three key maternity metrics; cesarean section, episiotomy and early elective delivery rates. Only eight hospitals in New Jersey achieved this accomplishment, and only 20 percent of hospitals nationwide fully meet Leapfrog standards on all three of these critical maternity measures.

Monmouth Medical Center delivers nearly 6,000 babies annually, making it the largest birthing hospital in Monmouth and Ocean counties. It is also the only hospital in the region to fully meet the standards for these three quality metrics.

“I am exceedingly proud that our A score in this latest update to the Hospital Safety Scores was earned despite the unparalleled challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic,” says said Eric Carney, President and Chief Executive Officer of Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus. “It’s gratifying to be nationally recognized for the high quality of care provided by our physicians and hospital staff. Despite the extraordinary challenges that surround us, the MMC team has demonstrated a continued commitment to patient safety and the reduction of avoidable harm as a High Reliability Organization.”
