Monmouth U Reinstates Greek Life With New GPA Minimum

Monmouth University indefinitely suspended fraternity and sorority activities in September.

Monmouth University will reinstate Greek life following an indefinite suspension of fraternity and sorority activities that began in September, the institution announced Tuesday. Monmouth will require all current and prospective members to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75, University President Grey J. Dimenna announced.

The University suspended all non-educational activities from Greek Life in September. Monmouth's Greek Senate had to submit a draft plan Aug. 15 to address issues such as hazing, alcohol and drug use and unsatisfactory academic focus, Dimenna said. But the Greek Senate's plan fell short, according to Dimenna.

Dimenna said in a statement that his decision to reinstate Greek life "follows many months of good work from our Greek students, several University administrators, the assistance of an external consultant, and engagement from our alumni and campus community to develop a comprehensive accountability-based plan."

Changes to Greek life at Monmouth will include reducing the number of weeks in the pledging process, establishment of Council Standard Boards to address violations, and a revised "report card" system to mark each chapter's progress, Dimenna said.
