POINT PLEASANT-Two students at Point Pleasant Borough High School have started an online petition to get the borough to ban plastic bags in the borough.

Christopher Nunez, a junior at Point Boro, started the group Point Against Plastic after learning about how plastic bags impact the environment in science class.

“I decided to start this group to initiate a change within our community,” Nunez says. “I feel that by making a change here, we can be a model for places throughout our state and country.”

Nunez reached out to a friend of his, fellow Point Boro student Heather Roselle, and the two set up the Point Against Plastic Instagram page to help spread awareness about both the message and the petition.

“With the aid of our petition, we are planning to reach out to leaders, starting with Point Pleasant Borough's Council and Mayor to help assist us in making the ban against single-use plastic bags,” Roselle says.

“We are excited to say that many residents in our town have reshared our Instagram, @PointAgainstPlastic, and its posts,” Nunez added. “Over one hundred people (and counting) have currently signed our petition, and many share it with family and friends.”

The impact that plastic bags have on the environment is negative and long-lasting, especially in a town like Point Pleasant. For both Nunez and Roselle, they would like Point Pleasant to take charge and be the leaders in making changes to help the environment.

“We hope that by focusing on our coastal community, we can be a model for future towns. We want the town to be recognized as change-makers,” Nunez says. “By signing our petition, our town is taking a step towards the safety of animals, cleaner waters, and prevention of environmental hazards.”
