LONG VALLEY, NJ — Cicadas have touched down in many unusual ways in New Jersey recently, whether through their own mating song and dance, by accompanying clarinetists and even blended into an ice cream flavor in one Princeton scoop shop.

They’ll be making a virtual landing though in Long Valley on Monday, June 14, for the Washington Township Public Library’s Zoom program “Magic Cicadas,” beginning at 7 p.m.

Attendees must pre-register for the event, with Senior Park Naturalist Laura Kroon Bush of the Hunterdon County Division of Parks & Recreation, who plans to give attendees a glimpse into the Brood X Cicada.

These cicadas have spent the last 17 years hiding out underground and are expected to be a part of New Jersey’s landscape for a short while, though while they’re here, it’s said to be into the billions.

The Cicada phenomenon may be attributed to the arrival of earlier warmer temperatures in New Jersey this year, with males musical to attract females, with cicadas bringing no harm or alarm to human New Jerseyans.
