On April 17, forty-two Scouts and family members from Long Valley Troop 236 participated in the Raritan Headwaters Association’s annual river clean-up event. The Troop’s volunteers removed trash from the South Branch of the Raritan River extending from the Columbia Trail trailhead on Bartley Road to the old Elizabeth Street bridge on the Columbia Trail, a stretch of about one mile. They also cleaned the banks of Drakes Brook from the Naughright Road overpass to where it joins the South Branch. As a result of their efforts, the Troop removed 15 bags of trash and 8 bags of recyclables from the river and its banks. In addition many large items such as six tires, a toilet, a TV, two chairs, building materials and other items too big to bag were also removed. This effort resulted in well over 1,000 pounds of trash removed from our watershed. This is the Troop’s 10th consecutive year participating in this event.
