RIVERDALE, NJ — Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren says she was fired from a Morris County school district in the 1970s after becoming pregnant.

Warren, currently a Senator from Massachusetts, was working in Riverdale as a speech pathologist during the 1970-1971 school year when she became pregnant with her first child. She said that when she finally looked visibly pregnant, she was "shown the door," CBS News reported.

Some outlets have raised doubt's about Warrens claims. The Washington Free Beacon reported a transcript from a school board meeting that year shows Warren was originally rehired in April 1971, before handing in her resignation that June.

Warren defended her description of why she left the Riverdale district, telling CBS News, "When someone calls you in and says the job that you've been hired for for the next year is no longer yours. 'We're giving it to someone else,' I think that's being shown the door."

Warren said that it was not yet obvious she was pregnant when she was re-hired in April, but by the time she was six months along she could no longer hide it.

"...The principal called me in, wished me luck, and said he was going to hire someone else for the job," Warren told CBS.

Other teachers who worked in Riverdale in the 1970s said that it was not uncommon for pregnant teachers to be asked to leave.

After leaving the Riverdale School System, Warren attended Rutgers Law School, had her second child, and was hired as a lecturer at the law school, nj.com reported.
