Taylor Ham Ice Cream Being Scooped Up At NJ Farm

Taylor ham is a Jersey favorite on breakfast sandwiches, and Windy Brow Farms is betting you'll love it in ice cream too.

FREDON, NJ — Ice cream is a summer staple, and Taylor ham is a New Jersey favorite. But you wouldn't put them together, right? One North Jersey farm is hoping you're willing to try the unlikely paring, and is scooping up their Taylor ham and French toast ice cream this summer.

Windy Brow Farms, located in Fredon Township, is offering the flavor as part of the farm's "Only in Jersey" collection, highlighting some classic Jersey favorites (sweet corn ice cream is another "Only in Jersey" ice cream flavor).

And before you ask, the farm knows there will be some objecting to Taylor ham ice cream— not because it's meat in ice cream, but because of the great Taylor ham vs. pork roll debate. They say the naming choice came down to how easy it would be to market the desert.

"We accept you. And all the pork roll people with you. But pork ice cream doesn't market well," the farm said on Twitter in response to a complaint. (A survey by NJ.com found that New Jerseyans are fairly split on the issue, with 45 percent calling it "Taylor ham.")

While the breakfast meat might be known for its salty, tangy flavor, the ice cream version isn't all salty. Taylor ham ice cream has a maple ice cream base with pieces of cinnamon sugar Tayor ham, maple syrup, and challah bread mixed in together to give the ice cream a balance of salty and sweet.

Managing partner Jake Hunt told NJ.com the sweet elements were added because a Taylor ham only flavor would be "gross." The syrup and cinnamon give the ice cream a "really good balance of super sweet and super salty.''

If you want to try the Taylor ham ice cream, you'll have to make the drive soon. Window Brow Farms is only scooping the flavor until the end of July. You can get more information on the farm here.
