LONG VALLEY, NJ - It may not have been the sophomore season as mayor that Matt Murello had envisioned, but his efforts and leadership during the COVID-19 crisis earned him the nod to continue serving in the post through 2021.

This will be Murello's third consecutive year as mayor. Under the Township form of government there is no direct election of mayor. Under the current township government laws, voters elect, at-large, the township committee comprising three or five members. The elections are partisan and the committee members serve staggered three-year terms. The township committee elects the mayor for a one-year term. The mayor serves as chair of the township committee and has powers vested in the mayor's office by general law.

Murello was reelection to the township committee in November running unopposed.

"Thank you also to the majority of the Committee who voted to have me serve as Mayor again in 2021," Murello said on social media.

Morris County Sheriff James Gannon administered Murello's oath of office and Commissioners Doug Cabana, Tayfun Selen and Morris County Surrogate Heather Darling also attended the meeting last week.

Murello wasted no time getting to work. In his first order of business this year, he administered the Oath of Office for the Officers of the Long Valley First Aid Squad and thanked them all personally for the work that they do in town.
