West Morris Central presents musical “Bright Star”

A production with bluegrass sounds of banjos, fiddles and songs.

Award winning theater group, Central Theatre from West Morris Central High School presents their spring musical “Bright Star”. A production with bluegrass sounds of banjos, fiddles and songs that surround the stage with nostalgia.

Inspired by a real event and featuring the Grammy-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, “Bright Star” tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40’s.

Propelled by an ensemble of onstage musicians and dancers, the story of literary editor Alice Murphy unfolds as she meets a young soldier just home from World War II and he awakens her spirit and drive to confront her past. Alice sets out on a journey to understand it all and what she finds has the power to transform the lives of many around her.

BRIGHT STAR opened on Broadway on March 24, 2016 and ran for 139 performances. The cast recording was nominated for the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

I asked the director Jeff Hogan why he choose this particular musical. He mentioned that the group had never had the chance to do a country musical before. Many of their past productions had been either highly abstract or explored epic war stories and drama. Jeff thought it was a good time for something comedic, charming in its delivery, and rich in its simplicity. A show that gives us hope and inspiration and reminds us of the power of love and forgiveness.
