Swimmer Drowns At Mahwah's Darlington Lake

One man drowned in Mahwah's Darlington Lake on Thursday night, the Bergen County Sheriff's Office confirmed. He has yet to be identified.

MAHWAH, NJ — One man drowned in Mahwah's Darlington Lake on Thursday night, the Bergen County Sheriff's Office said.

Two men, ages 20 and 21, went for a swim in the lake, but began to struggle in the water. A witness called 911, and Mahwah and Ramsey police officers responded.

Members of the Bergen County SCUBA Task Force, Bergen County sheriff's officers, and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office also responded, and both swimmers were retrieved from the lake, officials said.

Both received medical attention, and one of the swimmers was taken to Valley Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

His identity has not been released, pending notification of the family, said public information officer Keisha McLean.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the lake is only open for swimming on the weekends currently, so neither of the swimmers were permitted to be in the lake.
