Looking For Something Cool To Do? Try These Bergen County Locations

Learn how to scuba dive, tour a museum, play video games — there are a lot of options in Bergen County to staying cool indoors.

With the temperatures forecast to stay above 90 for most of the week, it is tempting to just stay indoors and run the air conditioning.

But there are a lot of ways to cool off in and near Bergen County besides just going to the local municipal pool.

Here are 10 things to do we found that should keep you and your family entertained while beating the heat.

  • World of Wings is located in Teaneck. This attraction has a butterfly atrium and museum. Butterflies are usually released in the atrium at 12:30 p.m. There's also an illusion room and a bounce house room. Hours: Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Adult admission is $16, children 2 to 11 years old is $11, teachers, veterans, and students, 12 to 17 years old, are $14 with identification.
  • Gamers Paradise is located in River Vale and Rochelle Park. Choose from more than 3,000 games on a number of current and retro gaming consoles. Rates are $6 for an hour, $18 for four hours, and $50 all day. Special events include Nintendo Tuesdays, Super Smash Bros. Wednesdays, and Grand Theft Auto Thursdays.
  • Learn how to make your own wine at The WineMakers Cellar in Hawthorne. Everything from grape selection and crushing to pressing and bottling is covered. Red, white, and rose wines can be made and custom labels can be created. The facility features a bistro and classes.
  • The Aviation Hall of Fame of New Jersey in Teterboro has a several exhibits, including the first American hovercraft, an interactive aerodynamics exhibit, and retired military aircraft. Admission costs $8, $6 for children and senior citizens.
  • Learn how to Scuba Dive at Blue Water Divers in Rochelle Park. Diving and swimming are taught in the facility's heated pool. Blue Water also hosts kids' birthday parties and hosts dive club meetings.
  • The Meadowlands Museum features several exhibits, including one about healthcare in the early 20th century. The two-floor exhibit features medicines, pharmacies from the region, and equipment, including syringes and thermometers. Hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
  • Indoor miniature golf at the Bogota Golf Center. The facility also has batting cages and bankshot basketball. Miniature golf costs $8 for adults, $6 for kids. Basketball costs between $6 and $9. Batting cages costs $2.50 for 15 pitches, 10 for 75 pitches.
  • The Fort Lee Museum contains artifacts and photographs from the Revolutionary War and from the days as the birthday of the American film industry. Outside the museum is Monument Park, which honors the soldiers of the American Revolution. The museum is open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
  • Have a laugh at Bananas Comedy Club in Hasbrouck Heights. Joe List will perform Friday and Saturday. He was a finalist in 2015 on "Last Comic Standing," he's the host of the hit podcast "Tuesdays with Stories," and he's appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman." Friday at 7:30 and 10 p.m., admission costs $45.
  • Darlington County Park in Mahwah features 178 acres and three lakes, two of which are for swimming from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During swimming season there is an entrance fee; however, Bergen County residents receive a discount with a Bergen County Parks card.

Four cooling centers are open to help residents, especially the elderly, stay cool this week. They are at:

  • Bergenfield Senior Center, 293 Murray Hill Terrace, Bergenfield, 201-387-7212
  • Southwest Bergen Senior Activity Center, 147 Hackensack St., East Rutherford 201-935-8920

The cooling centers will be open "for the next couple of days," officials said, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
