Bergen County Railroad Bridge Collapses

The bridge crosses Overpeck Creek in Ridgefield Park.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A railroad bridge partially collapsed into Overpeck Creek early Saturday morning, according to a railroad official.

Part of the 405-foot bridge collapsed on the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway at 8:20 a.m. as the train was crossing the creek, said Melanie Boyer, a railway spokeswoman.

No injuries were reported and the train was not derailed, but the last set of wheels on the last train car was in the water, Boyer said.

The bridge was scheduled to be replaced this year. Work was scheduled to begin Monday and a contractor set up equipment already, Boyer said.

Engineers last inspected the bridge June 27, Boyer said.

Train service over the bridge is suspended.

The century-old bridge carries more than 25,000 train cars annually. It was last rehabilitated in 1985, NorthJersey.com reported.
