Hugh Kilmer, Grandson Of 'Trees' Poet Joyce Kilmer, Dies At 77

Hugh Kilmer, grandson of legendary Mahwah poet Joyce Kilmer, died Thursday at age 77, the Joyce Kilmer Society of Mahwah confirmed.

Kilmer’s family and friends gathered at Our Lady of Grace Church in Hoboken for his funeral Monday, NJ.com reported.

Kilmer was buried at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah later that day.

The Joyce Kilmer Society of Mahwah has extended condolences to the Kilmer family.

Hugh Kilmer was a prolific artist. He was a painter, sculptor, and poet. He taught English, philosophy, and theology at Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I. He met his wife, Elizabeth Hines there, NJ.com reported.

Hugh Kilmer was born in 1938 in Arlington, Va. His maternal grandfather was Frederick Frieseke, an impressionist painter, the report stated.

Hugh Kilmer had been suffering from a degenerative disease, multisystem atrophy, his daughter said in the report. Kilmer is survived by his wife, five children, 10 grandchildren, and five brothers and sisters.
