Late Mahwah College Student, HS Coach Mourned

MAHWAH, NJ – The community is mourning the death of a 23-year-old Mahwah woman.

Allison Garbely passed away Monday, leaving behind her parents, two brothers, a sister and grandparents,according to her obituary.

Garbely was a student at Ramapo College, where she was majoring in psychology and also an assistant varsity lacrosse coach at Mahwah High School. During the summer, she worked as a counselor at Camp Sunshine, a program for special needs children.

Former teammates recalled Garbely's energetic and kind spirit, while many of her campers said they'll remember her for being so caring and loving.

Shoshana Ronen wrote, "Allie was one of the most beautiful people I have ever met both inside and out. Her compassion and desire to put others first was inspiring."

"When I think of Allie I just see that infectious smile that lays across her face throughout any points of the day. I am so happy I was able to meet such an amazing person. Allie had such a positive attitude and personality that could lighten and bring joy to anyone's day. Allie was such an inspiration to me and I will never forget the moments I made with her," wrote Melanie Totaro.

A wake is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff. An 11 a.m. memorial mass will be held Saturday at Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River, NJ.

"Her infectious laugh, her shining smile and bright eyes drew everyone into her circle of love. Allie was blessed with a generosity of spirit and gladly shared her light with those less fortunate. She connected with all people at an elemental level and had an empathy and understanding for everyone," her obituary says.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked contributions be made in Garbely’s memory to Camp Sunshine, 1133 East Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ, 07450.
