Longtime Mahwah Coach John Carty Inducted Into NJ Hall Of Fame

Carty, who has an annual basketball tournament named in his honor, taught in Mahwah for 22 years.

MAHWAH, NJ — John Carty asked one question everyday of his long teaching and coaching career: What is best for the kids?

Carty taught physical education and coached basketball at Mahwah High School for 22 years, from 1968 to 1990. He left a lasting impression on many kids there. The school gym is named after him. He died in 1990.

Carty was posthumously inducted into the New Jersey State Coaches Association Hall of Fame Sunday.

The annual John F. Carty Scholarship is awarded to two Mahwah High School seniors who demonstrate hard work and try to make the most of everyday, just like Carty did. More than $100,000 has been awarded since the scholarship was established in 1993.

The annual John F. Carty Scholarship Golf Outing raises money for the scholarships.

"In my life, there were a couple of coaches who really made a difference, and John Carty was one of them," said Roger Remo, the golf outing's organizer. "He made a difference for everyone he taught, which is why so many people come together to remember him every year. We want to keep his memory alive."
