Mahwah Native Named To USA Baseball Collegiate National Team

Mahwah High graduate Kyle Teel was named to the Collegiate National Team after a strong freshman season at the University of Virginia.

CARY, NC — Mahwah High School graduate Kyle Teel is one of 45 collegiate baseball players named to the Collegiate National Team roster, USA Baseball announced on Thursday.

Teel is coming off a strong freshman season at the University of Virginia, where he hit for an average of .335 and nine home runs.

The 45-man roster will be split into to teams for an intrasquad Stars vs. Stripes series, which begins on Friday. Team USA will not play an international opponent this year.

"We are thrilled to have such a strong group representing the U.S. on the 2021 Collegiate National Team as we tour through the cities of the Appalachian League this summer," said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball Collegiate National Team general manager.

"This year’s team offers a unique experience to play with, and against, some of the best collegiate baseball talent in the country in some of the best baseball communities, and we are looking forward to an incredible series."

Thirty different colleges are represented, with Virginia and Mississippi State University represented by three players, the most by any schools.

Teel was Mahwah High's first Gatorade Player of the Year honoree after finishing his 2019 season with a .574 batting average to go along with 31 RBIs and eight home runs. He also finished with a 0.60 earned run average from the mound.

Teel finished his prep career with a cumulative batting average of .430 and 14 home runs. He was projected to be chosen in the first three rounds of the 2020 draft, but decided to sign with Virginia prior to draft day.
