MAHWAH, NJ — Mahwah Public Schools will have a new superintendent next year in Michael DeTuro, a familiar face in the district.

DeTuro is the current Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the school district, but will take over the superintendent role in July, the Board of Education announced Wednesday.

"The Board of Education is excited that Dr. DeTuro will be the new leader of the Mahwah school district. He has been instrumental in strengthening the district’s mission of providing all students with the opportunity for success and has more recently played a key role in navigating us through the pandemic," said Board President Benjamin Kemarsky.

Over the course of the last year the district conducted a nationwide search that found 24 applicants. "In the end, Dr. DeTuro proved himself the best fit to carry forward the district's vision," the board said, in a statement.

DeTuro has served the district for the past 10 years, first as principal at the Joyce Kilmer School, and most recently in his current role. He will continue to manage the district's strategic planning as superintendent, the board said.

"I am honored to be selected as the next Superintendent of Schools for our school district," said DeTuro.

"Over the course of the last 10 years, I have had the fortunate opportunity to develop strong relationships with the students, staff, and members of the Mahwah community. I look forward to continuing to build these relationships, while also forging ahead in building new relationships - all needed to move this incredible district forward."

Many of those people received the news with joy, and took to Twitter to voice their excitement.

DeTuro's duties will officially begin on July 1, replacing interim Superintendent Leonard Fitts.
