Mahwah Town Council Approves Outdoor Dining Resolution

During a Thursday Zoom meeting, council members voted unanimously to pass a resolution allowing restaurants to open for outdoor dining.

MAHWAH, NJ — Town Council members voted unanimously to approve a resolution for outdoor dining during a Thursday meeting.

Township Attorney Brian Campion explained that Mayor John Roth, as well as members of the board of health and clerk's office have been working to fast-track the ordinance so businesses could be prepared to offer outdoor service on Monday at 6 a.m., when they are legally allowed to do so.

Roth, in an email to Patch, said he was in favor of outdoor dining in Mahwah.

The ordinance, according to Campion, allows for expanded outdoor dining at the township's already established restaurants, with approval from the building's landlord.

Mahwah's ordinance does not include language allowing businesses to occupy space on city sidewalks or city streets, contrary to what some other communities are doing. Campion said despite other municipalities choosing to go in this direction, the idea doesn't fit in Mahwah.

Campion added that the town clerk's office has been working with local businesses to prepare them for this passage, and that the needed application is finished and available to Mahwah restaurants.

In a letter from Health Officer Angel Musella, it is explained to those seeking an outdoor dining permit that a diagram of the proposed outdoor dining layout must be submitted no later than two days prior to the anticipated opening date of the restaurant.

According to the letter, no establishment can open before being approved by the health department.

Gov. Phil Murphy said earlier this month bars and restaurants can open for outdoor dining beginning Monday at 6 a.m. Employees of the establishments will have to wear masks, as will patrons who wish to go inside at any point.

Tables will be placed 6-feet apart, and parties will be limited to a maximum of eight people.
