So Far No Good for the Yankees

a look at the post season in the Bronx

So Far No Good for the Yankees

After a good but not great 2018 regular baseball season, Yankee fans hopeful of finally getting the bad taste of the post season out of their collective mouths with the 2018-19 offseason usually highlighted by the Winter Meetings. These meetings are underway this week in Southern California.

So far it has been an underwhelming post season for Team Steinbrenner.

This week the Yankees announced 2 transactions, neither of which makes them any better than they were last year—8 games behind the hated Deadsox. GM Brian Cashman resigned Brett Gardner and CC Sabathia to one year contracts for the upcoming season. I don’t like either move.

Gardner, a long time Yankee veteran outfielder has been in decline for some time now and last year was more of the same—disappointment. Gardy finished hitting .239 with minimal on base success despite having great speed he has never been a great base stealer. He has remained a solid defensive outfielder but the Yankees have many outfielder/DH types and I’d like to see if this kid Florial in the minors is the real deal. At best Gardy is the 4th or 5th outfielder on the Yankees and at his price tag, I feel Cashman misses an opportunity to get younger and passes up a great Free agent possibility—Michael Brantley of Cleveland

Likewise Cashman’s move of resigning CC is ill-advised in our view from here. While Cc has been a warrior it’s obvious to everyone that he is at best a 4 or 5 innings 5th starter, with a history of injuries as well. I don’t like this move because it’s an indication the rotation will not be much different from last year—an important requirement for advancement. Signing CC and JA Hipp precludes the Yankees from adding 3 starters that I think they need. Perhaps now Cash will only focus on 2 like Paxton from Seattle and Evoldi from the Deadsox. Johan Montgomery is coming back from Tommy John surgery later and the year and I’d rather see the Yankees go with Sheffield or Monty as a 5th starter.

As for the talk of Harper or Muchado, if the Yankees are hot for either one I hope it’s Muchado if only because Di Di Gregorius will not be ready for much of the first half of 2019. I’d suggest Cashman look at Daniel Murphy as the solution at first base, I’ve seen enough of Greg Bird.

If the Yankees decide to trade Florial for a number one starter, that would be the only way I would say it’s been a good winter meetings otherwise ,,,,,,Brian Cashman, I am watching you!!!!!!!
