Winter Weather Impacting Mahwah: Here's How

MAHWAH, NJ — Mahwah Public Schools went to virtual learning on Friday and explained their snow day decision in a letter Thursday afternoon.

"As we have shared with the community in the past, our goal is to allow the students and staff to enjoy these days as a social-emotional 're-charge,'" school administration wrote.

School officials put out a call for content during the last snow day, and produced this video from what they received.

Multiple school districts canceled class, or shifted to remote learning, ahead of the storm Thursday. At least one district, Saddle Brook, has announced remote learning for Friday classes, citing concerns over lingering travel conditions. "Road conditions are bad. Stay home. Stay safe."

The message was simple from the Fair Lawn Police Department Thursday afternoon as snow from the latest winter storm began to affect Bergen County.

Early snowfall totals from the National Weather Service indicate that within the first few hours of snowfall, up to 3.6 inches have been recorded in parts of Bergen County.

Here are the totals from Bergen County:

• Ridgewood — 3.6 in.
• Ridgefield — 3.2 in.
• East Rutherford — 2.8 in.
• New Milford — 2 in.

The winter conditions — including a "light glaze of ice" — could create a tricky commute Friday morning as the storm affects visibility and road conditions, according to the NWS.

New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti issued a commercial vehicle travel restriction on multiple Interstate highways in New Jersey as of 4 a.m. Thursday, but it a number of accidents have been reported statewide. Periods of light snow and a wintry mix could continue into Friday, with four to eight inches expected over the two-day period. A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Friday.

Here's what the NWS New York, New York office said to expect:

• A light to moderate snowfall likely starting Thursday morning, with periods of light snow or wintry mix continuing into Friday.
• A widespread 3-5 inches of snow is expected by Thursday night, with an additional 1-3 inches overnight into Friday, totaling 4-8 inches for much of the area by Friday evening.

Municipal adjustments have been made in a variety of Patch towns, most notably in Teaneck, where the Department of Public Works declared a snow emergency. This means residents are mandated to move their cars from roadways, or face ticketing or towing.

The snow is also having an effect on the flow of coronavirus vaccines into the county, and into arms of Bergen County residents.

Gov. Phil Murphy said the winter weather is causing COVID vaccine "supply chain issues" and that anticipated deliveries will be delayed.

Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco confirmed Tuesday this was true, stating that appointments at the Bergen New Bridge Annex Facility were postponed. Friday

Snow, mainly before 4pm. High near 33. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. Northeast wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Friday Night

A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before 10pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 26. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph.
