Carl Robert Osterlund, World War II Navy Veteran, Dies At 89

Services for West Belmar resident will be held on Wednesday and Thursday.

Carl Robert Osterlund "Bob", of West Belmar, peacefully passed away on March 19, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on January 27, 1927 to the late Joseph Osterlund and Cecilia Thornvalle. Bob completed his Navy training at the Sampson Naval Training Station in New York State and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Astoria. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Navy never left him, as friends and family will attest.

On June 5, 1949 he married the love of his life, Betty A Palmer. Bob worked with Morris T. Olsen Bowling Alley Co installing bowling alleys throughout the United States.. After retiring, he then worked at the family business, Wall Auto Wreckers in West Belmar. Before and after his retirement, he enjoyed helping out his son Carl at All Game Taxidermy. Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved his outdoor adventures across the US and Canada. He enjoyed working in his shop and helping loved ones FIX ANYTHING that needed repair.

Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty A Palmer-Osterlund, son, Carl Robert Osterlund Jr. and wife Gail; daughters Bobbie Garrison, Kathy Shaffer; Cyndie Fraley and husband Troy; as well as his many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a special man!!!!

Family and friends are invited to visit from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the Ely Funeral Home, Neptune. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at the Ely Funeral Home, Neptune, followed by the interment in Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
