Irish American Cultural Institute to Host Irish History Seminar
Join us for "Ireland 1913 to 1923: A Decade in a Day."

On Saturday, November 2, 2019, the IACI will host a one-day history symposium entitled “Ireland 1913 to 1923: A Decade in Day” that will examine ten momentous ten years in Irish history teeming with nation-shaping events, including rebellion and civil war, that formed the cornerstone of today’s Irish Republic. The venue is the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, 815-16th Avenue, Belmar from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Deputy Consul General of Ireland, Mr. Seán Ó hAodha, will attend on behalf of the President of Ireland, IACI's patron, and will present opening remarks.
The event will feature talks about period events by historians from both the U.S. and Ireland. Dr. Peter Halas, Chairman of the IACI, will open the day with an agenda overview, followed by lectures given by the following guest speakers: Dr. Christine Kinealy, professor of history and founding director of Ireland’s Great Hunger Institute at Quinnipiac University; Cormac O’Malley, whose father Ernie O’Malley played a role in the Irish War of Independence and Civil War; Conor McNamara, author of Liam Mellows: Soldier of the Irish Republic; and resident IACI historians Henry McNally, Maureen Brady and Mícheál Ó Máille.

Proceeds from the day will help to expand the chapter’s offerings, including adding to the scope of speakers for the monthly line-up, underwriting programs for younger generation Irish Americans, sponsoring contests, hosting traditional music and dance workshops, and conducting language & culture courses.
The Irish American Cultural Institute, founded in 1962, is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the rich history of Ireland and Irish America through its cultural programs. The mission of our local Jersey Shore Chapter is to provide and resources to preserve and promote Irish and Irish-American cultures. New members are welcome! Annual memberships dues are $50.
