4,800 Still Without Power As Manchester Cleans Up After Isaias
Repair crews made rapid progress in Manchester on Wednesday, restoring power to a wide swath of homes.

MANCHESTER, NJ — More than 4,800 homes in Manchester remained without electric service Wednesday evening as the township and state continued to clean up the damage caused when Tropical Storm Isaias tore through New Jersey on Tuesday.
Trees and power lines were brought down by the storm, which packed wind gusts up to 75 mph in nearby Berkeley Township. Thousands were without power Tuesday night, and by Wednesday morning there were just over 12,000 homes still without service, about 75 percent of the town, Mayor Ken Palmer said in a morning update.
By evening, Jersey Central Power & Light had restored two-thirds of those homes.

The company told state officials that power restoration could take until the end of the weekend, because of the extent of the damage. Even the electric transmission system suffered significant damage, said Joseph Fiordaliso, president of the state Board of Public Utilities.
