Driver 'Critical,' 2 People Hurt In Route 70 Crash In Lakehurst

Two people were flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center; the third suffered minor injuries, police said.

LAKEHURST, NJ — One person was critically injured and two others were hurt in a crash on Route 70 between a Jeep Liberty and a BMW on Thursday, police said Friday.

The crash happened shortly before 1 p.m. near the intersection of Route 70 and Route 547, Lakehurst Police Chief Matthew Kline said.

The driver of the Jeep Liberty was thrown from the vehicle; lifesaving measures were performed and the driver was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where the driver remains in critical condition, Kline said.

The passenger in the BMW suffered a head injury and also was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, but was later released, he said.

The driver of the BMW had minor injuries and was treated at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood and released, he said.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, Kline said. The Jeep Liberty ended up in the westbound lane of Route 70 with extensive damage, and the BMW also was extensively damaged and ended up off the road near the entrance to the Gulf station, Kline said.

Assisting at the scene were the Ocean County Fatal Accident Support Team, Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, Manchester Police and EMS, Lakehurst and Ridgeway Fire Departments, Joint Base Police, the state Division of Fish and Game, RWJ Paramedics, and the state Department of Transportation.
