Manchester Area Hospitals Have These Substandard Safety Conditions, Patient Survey Says

Local hospitals had below average safety conditions that involve a variety of conditions affecting patient care, according to a nonprofit group's patient survey of New Jersey hospitals (see list below).

The Leapfrog Group looked at medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections to determine the grades. The goal was to determine a patient's risk of further injury or infection if they visited a certain hospital.

The nonprofit founded by employers and health-care providers announced its Spring 2016 hospital safety rankings Monday, a measure of how safe a hospital is for patients in New Jersey.

Hospitals were given a letter grade from A through F based on several factors, according to the Leapfrog Group Study. Of the 2,571 hospitals studied nationwide, 798 earned an A, 639 earned a B, 957 earned a C, 162 earned a D and 15 earned an F.

One hospital, St. Michael's Medical Center of Newark, received an F. Bruno Tedeschi, a spokesman for the hospital, offered this statement:

"Given the long duration and uncertainty of the regulatory review for the sale of Saint Michael's Medical Center to Prime Healthcare Services, the hospital has not had the resources needed to participate in the Leapfrog survey. However, in about a week, the ownership of the hospital will be turned over to Prime Healthcare, which has long emphasized the seriousness and importance of quality and safety monitoring and understands the value of top-notch quality-of-care reporting. Prime is fully committed to participating in the Leapfrog survey in the future and having Saint Michael's scores truly reflect the high quality of care that we provide for our patients."

Each hospital was also given number scores for how they perform and treat patients in specific areas. Here are some of the substandard conditions at local hospitals:
