Manchester, Lakehurst Awarded State Grants For Roadwork

The grants are funded by New Jersey's Transportation Trust Fund.

MANCHESTER, NJ — Manchester Township and Lakehurst each have been awarded grants by the state for road improvement projects in their towns.

Manchester is set to receive $323,600 and Lakehurst is scheduled to receive $245,600, part of $161.25 million in Municipal Aid grants announced statewide by Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday. The funding comes from the Transportation Trust Fund. There were awards to 543 cities and towns across New Jersey.

Under the Municipal Aid grant program, each county is given a share of the total funding based on population and the number of local centerline miles. Municipalities compete for portions of their county's share. The state transportation department provides 75 percent of the grant amount when a town awards a contract and the remaining 25 percent upon completion of the project.

Applications for Municipal Aid grants were submitted to the state Department of Transportation by July 1 and were reviewed. There are seven project categories within the Municipal Aid grant program eligible for funding: Roadway Preservation, Roadway Safety, Quality of Life, Mobility, Bikeway, Pedestrian Safety, and Bridge Preservation. Past performance in connection with timely award of projects and construction close-out factors were part of the evaluation of the proposals.
