MAPLEWOOD COMMITTEE FOR SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN SEEKS ARMED SERVICE MEMBERS

The Maplewood Committee for Servicemen and Servicewomen is seeking names of Maplewoodians who are on active duty in any branch of military service. 

“Anyone in the military who is not now enrolled in our list of recipients and whose name we are given either by the service person of his family will receive our bimonthly packages including a wide variety of useful gifts, and will receive the News-Record and Matters Magazine,” said David H. Sprague, chairman of the Committee. 

Sprague said the packages now go to 20 Maplewood servicemen and women, but he said there could be others of whom the Committee is unaware.  He urged service persons not currently enrolled, or their family members, to contact Maplewood Town Hall, 973-762-8120 ext. 5. 

“The Committee is continuing a long tradition in the Township, going back to World War II, of recognizing and honoring our local citizens who serve in the Armed Forces,” Sprague said. 

 During World War II the Committee had almost 4,000 Maplewood servicemen on its rolls.  It was deactivated in 1956, but resumed activities during the Vietnam War and has been operational since.  Among its activities, the committee sends bimonthly packages to township servicepersons, marks birthdays and assists in their communications from home, sends the News-Record and Maplewood Matters, and distributes plants donated by the Garden Club to mothers of the servicepersons.
